The Passing of the Former Head of the Research Department, BG Amit Sa'ar
The IDF announces that BG Amit Sa’ar passed away this morning (Thursday) after a prolonged battle with a serious illness.

BG Amit Sa’ar, 47, is survived by his wife, three children, his mother, and three sisters.
Amit served as Head of the Research Department in the Intelligence Directorate from October 2020 to April 2024. He served in the role during the October 7th massacre and the “War of Redemption”, and concluded his position following a medical diagnosis that required immediate treatment.
The funeral of BG Amit Sa’ar will be held tomorrow (Friday), January 2, 2026, at 12:00, at the Kiryat Shaul Cemetery.
The Chief of the General Staff, LTG Eyal Zamir, the IDF General Staff Forum, IDF commanders and soldiers bow their heads in mourning, honoring his many years of service and his significant contribution to the security of the citizens of the State of Israel.

“The entire IDF bows its head in grief at the passing of BG Amit Sa’ar. Amit was an outstanding officer and commander - a leader who went before his troops, with a deep sense of mission and commitment to the security of the State of Israel. We honor his many years of contribution to the Intelligence Directorate and to Israel's security apparatus. The IDF shares in the profound sorrow of his family and embraces them in this difficult time.”
